Acton High Street, London
St George& theDragon
An History
The First Record
A conveyance between William Edwy and John Garway of a messuage called The George and other lands in Acton — the earliest known document placing this establishment on the High Street.
Gervase Lawson
Trade tokens bearing "George and Dragon" on the reverse and Gervase Lawson on the obverse are issued. Lawson remained landlord until 1680 — the first named keeper of the Dragon. No entries appear in the licensing lists up to 1732.
The Acton Machine
Mentioned as the departure point for the Acton Machine — a coach to Oxford Street, London. It also went to the Green Man in Ealing. The Middlesex Deed Registry records a tenement sign of "The George" occupied by William Hol…, John Johnson and George Rose, whose name appears in the rate books from 1749 to 1751.
George and Dragon
The George reappears as the George and Dragon in the High Street. A gap follows until 1759 when the rate books were held at the law courts.
Licensed & Listed
The George and Dragon appears in the licensing lists — and from then on, a continuous list of landlords endures to the present day.
Still Your Local
Nearly five centuries on, the George & Dragon remains exactly what it has always been — a proper community pub at the heart of Acton, welcoming everyone through its doors.

"One of the most characterful pubs I've visited in London. The fact it's been here since Tudor times is remarkable. Proper British pub — none of the corporate nonsense. A genuine gem."
